‘TIDES’, UNIVERSITY OF MÁLAGA AWARD FOR THE BEST FEATURE FILM IN FANCINE’S 31ST EDITION

‘Hold Me Tight’ and ‘Dar-Dar’ win best animated and live action short film, respectively

The 31st edition of Fancine already has its winners. The Swedish-German production ‘Tides’, by filmmaker Tim Fehlbaum has been awarded the University of Málaga award to the best feature film, according to the Official Jury’s verdict, formed by Las Bloody Girls, the creative duo Aida Méndez and Elena Lombao; the French actress Yara Pilartz and the producer Steven Bratter. The film, set in a postapocalyptic world where half of the population has disappeared and the fate of the remaining survivors depends on a dedicated astronaut’s decision, receives a 9.000€ prize, as well as recognition in other categories such as best special effects.

Along with this edition’s big winner, the terrifying British proposal 'In the Earth' stands out in the verdict of the evaluation committee, gathers three statues: best editing for Ben Wheatley, who also directs, as well as best actor and best actress for Reece Shearsmith and Ellora Torchia respectively. The Chinese super production ‘Cliff Walkers’ has risen with two trophies, best cinematography for Zhao Xiadoing’s work and best director for the acclaimed director Zhang Yimou. The repertoire of honorific recognitions is completed with the best screenplay for the raw story told in 'Hinterland’, written by its director Stefan Ruzowitzky in collaboration with Robert Buchschwenter and Hanno Pinter, and best sound design for ‘Belle’, the animation film by Mamoru Hosoda.

But feature films aren’t the only winners in Fancine. The accords also include the podium in the competitive section of short films, decided by this edition’s young jury. The committee, formed by six students from different public universities in Andalucía, has decided to concede the top price in the Live Action category, with 3.000 euros, to the Spanish work ‘Dar-Dar’, by filmmaker Paul Urkijo. In animation, the winning piece has been 'Hold Me Tight’, a Belgian production directed by Mélanie Robert-Tourneur, awarded with the same amount. Likewise, the jury has given the RC Service award for best photography, with a 1.500 prize to be invested in digital cinema cameras, to ‘Inferno’, an Australian project by Katherine Chediak. From this group’s consensus also comes the Silver Méliès distinction to the Czech production ‘Love Is Just a Death Away’, by Vitezslav Chovanec, who will represent Fancine in the Golden Méliès awards for the best European fantastic short film.

Other awards

The complete list of winners includes those that were selected by the Fancine audiences via their votes throughout the week. In this way, the public has determined that the film to receive the 1.000 euro public’s choice award will be ‘Belle’, which continues to make Fancine history not only by being the first animated film to be a part of the festival’s official section, but also to win this award. Interestingly, he audience and the press agree on their verdict, as the “Gato Rabioso” award, an honorific recognition given by the accredited press in each edition, also falls onto the colorful revision of the classic ‘The Beauty and the Beast’ by Hosoda, ‘Belle’, with a double bill in the popular section of the list of winners.

And the titles ‘See You in an Hour’, chosen in the real image category, and ‘Other Half’, the favorite animated short, have also been awarded via the largest accumulation of public votes in the short film competition. Both pieces will obtain an economic reward amounting to 500 euros each.

The reading of the ruling was made public at the closing gala, held at 8:00 p.m. this Thursday, November 18, in Room 1 of the Albéniz Cinema. The ceremony, where the female scientists that were featured in this edition’s ad (‘CAOS’) had a starring role, was hosted by poet David Leo, one of the newest Pasapalabra winners, and ended with a screening of ‘The Pink Cloud’, by Brazilian director Iuli Gerbase, which closes nine days of cinema in the university festival.
